Check Valves for Space

High Flow in Small Package Sizes

Check valves provide one-way gas or liquid flow, which is a critical application for propulsion systems. As such, launch vehicles typically incorporate hundreds of Lee Check® Check Valves.

Where the space industry is concerned, The Lee Company has adapted a wide range of check valves to incorporate various elastomeric and polymeric valve seats compatible with commonly required fluids. Our valve seats eliminate leakage across the wide temperature and pressure ranges required of liquids traveling from cryogenic storage to combustion in a rocket engine.

Lee Cheks are available in many configurations for every conceivable spacecraft application. Choose from different flow rates, packaging requirements, operating temperatures and pressures, and allowable leakage.

For best practices and decision support when selecting a check valve, download our eBook, An Engineer’s Guide to Selecting a Check Valve, which provides an unbiased look at different varieties of check valves, decision-making factors, common trade-offs, and common failure modes to be aware of.

Over half of the products we offer are designed for the unique needs of a specific application. Check valves can be designed in custom envelopes and configurations with unique cracking pressures, flow rates, leakage specifications, materials, and more. One potential challenge is the instability of the check valve’s components and we have several solutions to eliminate the problem depending on the exact system conditions. Ball-Style Check Valves

Our most economical designs – simple check valves that provide flow around a 440C ball which forms the sealing element.

Axial style ball check valves are designed for 3000 psi systems and are available in 0.187 and 0.250 inch diameter envelopes, screened and unscreened, and in forward and reverse flow configurations.

Side exit check valves with porting allow the ball to move out of the flow path, creating an increased flow capacity and enhanced silt resistance in package sizes ranging from 0.093 to 0.343 of an inch.

HFS (High Flow Slotted) Lee Chek® check valves offer up to three times the flow capacity and a 5000 psi operating pressure rating in a significantly smaller package that includes 0.156, 0.187, and 0.250 inch diameters.

High Flow Check Valves

Our line-up of poppet-style check valves offers extremely high flow capacity for their size in comparison to ball-style valves and includes our Lo-Lohm Cheks, Hi-Q Cheks, and High Pressure Cheks. The High Pressure Chek starts at a micro-miniature 0.125-inch diameter, yet still withstands up to 8000 psi. Meanwhile, the Hi-Q Chek offers the greatest feasible flow capacity for valves of this size. Available in sizes up to 1 inch in diameter in a cartridge configuration, the Hi-Q Chek valve can flow over 57 GPM with only a 100 psid pressure drop. Finally, the 0.250 inch Lo-Lohm Chek offers 3.5 times more flow than an axial flow ball-style check valve of the same diameter.

Zero Leak Check Valves

Lee Zero Leak Cheks feature an elastomeric seat material for applications where eliminating leakage is critical. They utilize a poppet-style, axial flow design with a choice of two different elastomers, and are available in 0.187, 0.250, 0.375, and 0.500 inch diameters.

Extreme Environment Check Valves

If you need a check valve that can withstand working pressures up to 15,000 psi and operating temperatures of up to 400°F, The Lee Company offers a solution to fit your needs. These valves are constructed of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and are available with multiple polymeric valve seat material options to achieve zero leakage in the checked direction under extreme hot or cold temperatures.

Pilot-Operated Check Valves

Lee Pilot-Operated Cheks are pressure piloted to open check valves available in diameters ranging from 0.250 to 0.500 of an inch. When pressure is applied to the pilot port, flow is allowed in the direction that is normally blocked. While our base version is a poppet-style valve designed for 3000 psi systems, our high-pressure models are designed for system pressures of up to 5000 psi and are available in forward and reverse flow configurations. Custom configurations with zero leak seals are available upon request.
